Church Update April 22nd, 2020

Church Update Covid-19
Dear Friends,

What have you done with your time since you've been at home? Has your home turned into your new place of employment or a google classroom for the kids you teach at school? Have you taken more walks? Have you done some much needed Spring cleaning? Have you actually gotten more sleep? Given that many of us with the safer at home orders from our local and state leaders are literally staying home, we have no doubt you're finding that you have more time doing the things you've always wanted to do and maybe for whatever reason haven't been able to do.

James 1:2-3 writes, "Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Where in your life right now are you experiencing that joy? Where do you see the joy of the Lord with everything that has been happening in our community, our city, and our world around Covid-19? As we know from the passage, the key phrase is faith that produces perseverance or patience. What ever it is that you've been doing with your time, our prayer as a church family is that you're experiencing a new found joy in knowing that Christ indeed is what gives us hope during times of uncertainty and difficulty.

As a faith community we will continue to abide by the safer at home mandates from our local and state leaders, knowing that once we're able to gather together, we will alert all of you as soon as we're able. Pastor Ross and our church elders are discussing a plan on how we will regather for worship once the safer at home orders are lifted. As some of you have experienced recently, we are seeing that the church and God's mission continue even though we haven't been able to worship as a church on Sunday mornings or through out the week. We had a blessed Holy Week as well as Easter Sunday in worshiping together and celebrating Christ and his victory over death via livestream on Facebook and YouTube. Thank you for worshiping with us "virtually." Don't forget that we will continue to keep the church campus closed until further notice. Visit our Facebook page for all church ministry updates, including for children and youth online or contact the church office directly at [email protected] If you need pastoral care don't hesitate to contact Pastor Ross or K.C. at any time. Contact them directly or leave a voice message at the church at 818.842.5103.

Wednesday Night Bible Study
We will continue meeting with Pastor Ross on Facebook Live at 7:00pm most Wednesday evenings. Barring no technical glitches, if you miss the Bible study know that you can re-watch the Bible Study the following day on Facebook or YouTube. Our 10:00am worship service on Sunday mornings will also continue to stream on both Facebook Live and YouTube. Don't forget to join us for worship and thank you for being patient during these times with experimenting with how we make sure all of you are able to access our worship services. If you missed the service this past Sunday, know that you can also listen to the message on the church website or in the church app, which you can find in any of the app stores by searching for Burbank Presbyterian Church. (Itunes or Google Play).

ZOOM Coffee Meetup with the Pastors Monday April 27th at 1:30pm
Our Church Elders had their first Session meeting via ZOOM for the first time recently. We're grateful for how technology can actually help us continue to be faithful in making sure God's mission is carried out. On April 27th we will have a ZOOM Coffee meetup with the pastors at 1:30pm. If you're interested in receiving the invite please contact the church office at [email protected] or contact Pastor Ross or K.C. for details. We're going to use our time as a way to connect with one another and pray for each other while we're still remaining at home.

Finally, we are more than thankful for your continued support of our mission here at Burbank Presbyterian Church. Don't forget you can mail in your financial support to the church office care of: Burbank Presbyterian Church, 521 E. Olive Ave. Burbank, CA 91505. Feel free to also give online through the church website at burbankpres.org/give or in the church app that you can download in any of the app stores (Itunes or Google Play).

Image may contain: tree, sky and outdoorDid you know? Dave Lessley recently went through some of our old church archives and found out something very interesting written in the minutes of the Church Elder Board from April 7, 1919; "The past year has been one of many discouragements, but also we have many things to encourage us to go forward.  Our regular Pastor, Rev. H.A. Rudin, was granted a leave of absence to take up YMCA work. We then secured the services of Rev. J.G. Garth who was with us until May, 1918. Rev. Clifford Barrett then took charge and the church was making excellent progress when, owing to the influenza epidemic, our church was closed from October 6th to December 29th, on which we held our first service. Up to and following the epidemic, our people have entered heartily into our work." What a powerful testimony to know that the church is more than just a building. It's the people who make up the church and that God's mission continues no matter what's happening in our world.

We're praying for all of you and we know that we will one day meet again for worship. Until that day, be encouraged and as you often hear at church from Pastor Ross on a Sunday morning, "God loves you more than you'll ever know."

Lord bless you all.
